About
Maluuba was founded by University of Waterloo graduates Kaheer Suleman and Sam Pasupalak and built natural language understanding systems, first as a voice assistant and later as a research lab focused on machine reading and reasoning. Microsoft announced its acquisition on 13 January 2017, with AI researcher Yoshua Bengio joining in an advisory capacity; the company's Montreal research operation continued under Microsoft. Paul Gray brought Maluuba's startup lessons to the TechWaterloo stage in October 2016, a few months before the sale.
