About
Neil Wainwright started Nexonia in Toronto to sell flexible expense reports and timesheets to mid-market finance teams — the kind of company that has outgrown spreadsheets but does not want an enterprise implementation. A PRWeb release marking the company's tenth anniversary in 2014 puts the start in the mid-2000s, and the host who introduced Wainwright at TechVancouver in February 2019 said he had begun about fifteen years earlier, before anyone used the word SaaS. The business became a consolidation story: Nexonia merged with Tallie in 2016, and in June 2017 K1 Investment Management put more than $125 million behind combining Nexonia, Tallie and ExpenseWatch under the Certify brand. Certify and Chrome River merged in March 2019 in a deal reported at more than $1 billion, and the group — Certify, Chrome River, Abacus, Captio, Nexonia and Tallie — was rebranded as Emburse. The product is sold today as Emburse Nexonia. Wainwright appeared on a TechVancouver panel with Kim Kaplan of Plenty of Fish in February 2019 on the trials of scaling a startup through to acquisition; he told the room he was in temporary retirement and spending his time advising founders on product-market fit.
Backers
Backed by K1 Investment Management through the 2017 Certify combination; the product now sits inside Emburse, formed from the March 2019 Certify–Chrome River merger.
