About

Garrett Gottlieb and Phil Jacobson started PumpUp in 2012 out of the University of Waterloo's Velocity Garage — an iOS app that paired workout coaching with a feed where people posted progress photos, which turned out to be the part that stuck. It won Velocity funding in the autumn of 2012, passed 100,000 users within a year of launch, and moved into its own offices in downtown Toronto. In July 2014 it closed a $2.4 million seed round led by General Catalyst Partners, with Azure Capital Partners, Relay Ventures and Freycinet Investments joining, after roughly $230,000 in earlier angel money and a no from the Dragons on Dragons' Den. Jacobson spoke at TechTO in August 2015 on how the company used social media to grow that early audience. PumpUp has since closed; Jacobson is now VP of operations and product at the Toronto creator-economy company #paid.
