Spocket

Spocket is a Vancouver dropshipping marketplace connecting online retailers to suppliers in North America and Europe, so a store can list and sell products without holding inventory or paying upfront. Saba Mohebpour founded it in 2017; the platform says it now serves more than 300,000 stores across 190-plus countries.

About

Mohebpour arrived in Canada from Iran in 2012 to study pre-med at UBC, found in his final year that international students could not apply to Canadian medical school, and taught himself to program instead. His first startup, a safer classifieds app called Vanchat, had 5,000 daily users and closed in mid-2016 because he could not cover $400 a month in server costs. He joined The Next Big Thing accelerator, spent the last weeks of 2016 reading Reddit and Quora for a problem worth solving, and built Spocket around the supplier quality gap in dropshipping. It raised about US$2 million across two rounds, the larger a US$1.5 million seed in August 2018.

Quick answers

What does Spocket do?

It connects online retailers to dropshipping suppliers concentrated in North America and Europe, so orders ship direct from the supplier and the retailer carries no inventory.

Who founded it?

Saba Mohebpour, in 2017, after a failed classifieds startup and a stint in The Next Big Thing accelerator in Vancouver.

Why does supplier location matter?

Dropshipping's usual weakness is long shipping times from overseas suppliers; Spocket's pitch is a supplier base close to the customer.
