About

StoryTap was founded by Bernadette Butler and Sean Braacx and began as a consumer tool for capturing family life stories. People liked the idea but did not use it, while businesses kept asking for the technology — so a pilot with a handful of brands became the pivot, and the company rebranded to StoryTap in September 2016. The product gives a recorder a teleprompter-style set of prompts, tracks the consent that lets a brand reuse the clip, and collects everything in a manager. Braacx demoed it at TechVancouver two months after the rebrand. The company raised a USD $2.3M seed round led by Refinery Ventures with StandUp Ventures in 2021, is a Techstars portfolio company, and has worked with Canadian Tire, TELUS and Enfamil among others.

Backers

Refinery Ventures led a USD $2.3M seed round in 2021 with StandUp Ventures; the company also names BDC as a backer and is a Techstars portfolio company.

Quick answers

What does StoryTap do?

It sends one link to the customers or staff a brand wants to hear from, walks each of them through recording short video answers to set prompts, records their consent, and assembles the clips into video the brand can publish.

Who founded StoryTap?

Bernadette Butler, who is chief executive, and Sean Braacx.

What was it before?

A do-it-yourself tool for recording a family's life stories on film. Braacx said people loved it but nobody used it — getting a grandparent to sit down and record was too much work — while businesses wanted the same technology, so the company pivoted and rebranded in 2016.
