About
Xatoms searches for photocatalysts — materials that break down contaminants in water when light hits them — by combining quantum chemistry modelling with machine learning, rather than testing candidate materials one at a time in a lab. The point is infrastructure-free treatment: sunlight or an LED, no pipes and no plant, aimed at communities without reliable treated water. It was founded in 2024 by Diana Virgovicova, who is CEO, Kerem Topal Ismail Oglou, who leads the quantum modelling, and Shirley Zhong, who is COO, while they were students at the University of Toronto and Western University. The company raised a $3-million pre-seed round and moved into pilot projects. Zhong took the TechTO Together Toronto stage in January 2026 to talk about building at the intersection of water, sustainability and emerging technology.

Quick answers
What does Xatoms do?
It uses quantum chemistry and AI to find materials that purify contaminated water when exposed to sunlight or LED light, so treatment does not require a plant or piped infrastructure.
Who founded Xatoms?
Diana Virgovicova (CEO), Kerem Topal Ismail Oglou and Shirley Zhong (COO), in 2024, while studying at the University of Toronto and Western University.
How much has Xatoms raised?
A $3-million pre-seed round, which BetaKit reported it used to launch pilot projects.
