About
Plenty of Fish grew out of a side project Markus Frind launched from his Vancouver apartment in 2003, and it stayed free while its competitors charged — which is how Malgosia Green, who joined as CEO in 2018 from Top Hat, explained its growth when she took the TechVancouver stage that December. She said POF had more than 150 million registered users and was the second most downloaded dating app in the United States, and that its user base was the most demographically diverse of any dating app: people with high-school educations and people with PhDs, in rural towns as well as large cities, across a wide age range. Green ran interviews with more than 50 users and reported that what tied them together was finding other apps intimidating and high-pressure. She returned to the Best of TechTO stage in March 2019 to talk about what she had learned. Frind was the sole owner when Match Group acquired the company in 2015.
Backers
None. Plenty of Fish never raised venture capital and Markus Frind was its sole owner at the time of the sale.
Quick answers
Who founded Plenty of Fish?
Markus Frind, who launched it from his Vancouver apartment in 2003 and remained its sole owner. The company never took venture capital, which is why he kept the full proceeds when it sold.
Who owns Plenty of Fish now?
Match Group, which acquired it in an all-cash transaction worth $575 million USD announced in July 2015. It sits alongside Tinder, OkCupid and Match.com in the same group.
What made Plenty of Fish different from other dating apps?
It was free when rivals charged, and Malgosia Green told TechVancouver in 2018 that its users were the most diverse of any dating app — spread across education levels, ages and rural as well as metropolitan areas — and chose it because other apps felt intimidating.
