About

Five founders — Peter Kieltyka, Ian Ha, William Hua, Daniel Racca and Michael Sanders — started Horizon Blockchain Games in Toronto in 2018 to build Skyweaver, a web-based digital trading-card game where players own their cards. Ha told a TechTO panel in March 2023 that when they set out there was no off-the-shelf software for what they needed, so they built their own wallets and services and called the result Sequence. That platform, which lets other studios add wallets, payments and onchain data to their games without asking players to understand any of it, outgrew the game: the company now operates under the Sequence name and sells the infrastructure. Ha's argument for gaming as web3's clearest use case was that tokens, marketplaces and trading have been native to games for decades, so the behaviour needs no explaining.

Backers

Reported to have raised a $40M Series A led by Brevan Howard Digital and Morgan Creek Digital in 2022, after an earlier seed round led by Initialized — figures not confirmed against a primary announcement.

A Toronto blockchain infrastructure company. Its platform gives game and app developers wallets, payments and onchain data tooling that end users do not have to think about.

Was it called something else?

Yes. It was founded in 2018 as Horizon Blockchain Games, the studio behind Skyweaver, and now operates under the name of the infrastructure it built, Sequence.

What did its founders say on the TechTO stage?

Co-founder Ian Ha told a March 2023 TechTO Web3 panel that gaming is the most promising near-term use case for web3, because tokens, trading and marketplaces have been native to games for decades.
