About
Tobi Lütke, Daniel Weinand, and Scott Lake launched Shopify in Ottawa in 2006 after building store software for their own snowboard shop, Snowdevil, and deciding the tool was the better business. The company went public in 2015 and now trades on the NYSE and TSX as one of Canada's most valuable public companies, earning revenue from subscriptions plus payments, shipping, and lending. Harley Finkelstein, who met Lütke while at law school in Ottawa, has spent 17 years at the company and is its President.

Quick answers
Is Shopify a Canadian company?
Yes. Shopify was founded in Ottawa in 2006, keeps its headquarters there, and is listed on both the Toronto Stock Exchange and the NYSE. As President Harley Finkelstein noted on the TechTO stage, most merchants have no idea the company is Canadian — he spent 20 years building it from Ottawa before moving to Montreal.
How much does it cost to start selling on Shopify?
The entry-level Basic plan runs about $39 a month (less on annual billing), plus payment processing fees. On the TechTO stage, Finkelstein used that price to argue this is the best time ever to start a business: if it fails, you don't lose your house — 'you simply lose your 39 bucks.'
Who founded Shopify, and who runs it now?
Tobi Lütke, Daniel Weinand, and Scott Lake founded Shopify, which grew out of Snowdevil, the Ottawa snowboard store Lütke built software for in 2004. Lütke remains CEO, and Harley Finkelstein — who joined 17 years ago after meeting Lütke during law school in Ottawa — is President; he is not a founder.
